Install and connect

Memo connects Claude Code and Codex on your computer to your graph on our server. It takes one command per computer.

Before you start

Install

1. Get your install line

Open Account and press Connect a computer. You get one line with a one-time code. The code works once and expires after 15 minutes.

2. Paste it, then confirm

Paste the line into a terminal on the computer you want to connect, or into Claude Code or Codex running on it. It looks like this, with your own code:

curl -fsSL https://memo.example/kit/install.py -o memo-install.py && python3 memo-install.py --server https://memo.example --code ABCD-EFGH

Then just confirm. A terminal asks once: Continue? [Y/n]. Claude Code or Codex asks to run the command. Memo works from your next Claude Code or Codex session.

The installer connects this computer to your account and gives it its own key. Every file it downloads is listed with its SHA-256 checksum at /kit/SHA256SUMS.

Updates

When Memo's hooks or instructions change, your agent tells you in one line and asks. Say yes, and it installs the update. You can also run it yourself:

~/.memo/bin/memo update

The update keeps this computer's key and replaces only Memo's own files. The new version works from the next session.

If memo update doesn't work on an older install, run this once instead:

curl -fsSL https://memo.example/kit/install.py -o memo-install.py && python3 memo-install.py --update

Connect a session

Start Claude Code or Codex as usual and ask it to connect to Memo. In Claude Code, type /memo; in Codex, type $memo.

The session registers as a branch, gets its passport and starts writing its steps to the map. Open the panel to watch it and to set the passport.

The passport comes first. Agents read it on every turn. Where it says no, the branch prepares the work and asks you in the inbox.

What the installer changes

WhereWhat
~/.memo/config.jsonYour Memo address, owner name, time zone and kit version.
~/.memo/tokenThis computer's key. Only your user can read the file, and no Memo tool prints it.
~/.memo/bin/memoThe memo command your agents use to read and write the graph.
~/.memo/memo-hook.pyThe hook Claude Code and Codex run on session events.
~/.claude/settings.jsonMemo hooks for Claude Code, and permission to run the memo command and the Memo MCP tools without asking each time. Your other settings stay as they are.
~/.codex/hooks.jsonMemo hooks for Codex.
~/.claude/skills/memo/
~/.codex/skills/memo/
The memo skill: how a session works with its branch.
~/.claude/CLAUDE.md
~/.codex/AGENTS.md
A short Memo block between markers; the Codex file only if Codex is installed. The rest of each file stays as it is.
Claude Code MCP servers, user scopeA server named memo, added only if claude is on your PATH.

MCP

If claude is on your PATH, the installer runs this for you, with this computer's key in place of the placeholder:

claude mcp add --scope user --transport http memo https://memo.example/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer <this computer's key>"

The key goes straight to Claude Code and isn't shown on screen. For Codex, the installer prints the setting to add yourself.

Tools your agents get:

ToolWhat it does
memo_listLists your branches.
memo_briefA short digest of one branch.
memo_showOne branch in full, or one of its nodes.
memo_registerCreates a branch.
memo_applyWrites changes to a branch's nodes.
memo_pending_answersYour answers the branch hasn't picked up yet.
memo_logThe branch's history of changes.

The memo command

Agents also reach the graph through ~/.memo/bin/memo. You can use it too:

~/.memo/bin/memo list

When something is wrong, it says what to do in one line:

Disconnect a computer

On Account, press Revoke next to the computer. Its key stops working right away. Your graph and your other computers aren't affected.

Uninstall

To remove Memo's files and settings from a computer, download the installer again and run it with --uninstall:

curl -fsSL https://memo.example/kit/install.py -o memo-install.py && python3 memo-install.py --uninstall

It removes only the Memo block from CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md and restores your settings from the backups it made at install.

If Claude Code still lists the memo MCP server afterwards, remove it:

claude mcp remove --scope user memo

Then revoke the computer on Account, so its key stops working.
